75 years ago on 8 May the Second World War ended on European soil. As the world currently faces one
of the biggest global crises ever since, it is all the more our duty to remember one of the most
painful chapters of our shared history, mourn the victims and ensure we never forget the
lessons from this tragedy.
This high-level informal meeting is one of the signature events of Estonia’s presidency of the
Security Council. It will bring together more than 70 countries across the world, including
around 50 foreign ministers.
The meeting is moderated by Foreign Minister of Estonia Urmas Reinsalu. We are happy to
welcome as our briefers President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, UN
Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo, and
Professor of Yale University Timothy Snyder.
